About Scarab Pots
My name is Abigail and I am Scarab Pots. I live in Bristol, UK.
I make beautiful pots for your home and I run classes and workshops from my studio in Keynsham, as well as raku days on a beautiful farm between Bristol and Bath.
I was a teacher for more than 20 years and I love working with people, helping them to learn new things and push them out of their comfort zones. I believe that we grow through learning, trying and failing, and then trying again. I am a self-taught potter and I still get better every day (apart from the days that I don't and nothing goes right!). Practice makes progress.
Pottery is such a mindful, relaxing activity, and I am so lucky that I get to make pots every day! I believe that pottery - whether this is merely the sensory experience of playing with clay, or the creative expression and satisfaction of crafting a beautiful pot - is good for you. It's good for the mind, good for the body and good for the soul.
I used to throw all my pots on the potter’s wheel. However, over the last couple of years, I have found that handbuilding is my more my style. I find I can be much more creative this way and the organic, wonky, asymmetry of handbuilt work much better reflects who I am as a person, as well as an artist. I generally only throw when teaching nowadays.
I started my business in April 2022, and I’m still learning and growing into my business.
All my pots are stamped on the bottom with a scarab beetle.
Scarab beetles have shells that are multi-tonal and iridescent and incredibly beautiful. I love glazes like that - glazes where you can't really describe what colour it is in one word.
In Ancient Egypt, scarabs were worshipped as symbols of renewal, good fortune and hope - and who wouldn't want that for their business?
Also, well, beetles are really cool!
If you’ve never tried pottery before, why not give it a go?!
